A brand new flawless building is beautiful and fascinating for sure, with the freshness that looks good on cover pages. However, when the novelty has worn off, and time has started to put its mark on it, the glossy magazines have turned their attention elsewhere! Like the fashion industry, the building industry idolizes the flawless, fresh and untried architecture, with no marks on it’s surface.

The life-span of a building outlives that of it’s makers by many centuries, if done right. Therefore we should keep in mind that, much as we build to meet present demands, we also build for the future, using materials, forms, structures, and planning solutions that endure the test of time. Otherwise our buildings may end up obsolete, unloved, and perhaps even demolished before long.

We cannot expect to be able to create such ageless beauties as the Pantheon of Rome or Hagia Sophia of Istanbul, just as we probably won’t look as good as Sophia Loren when we turn 70. There are too many factors that are out of our control, such as the world economy, the power balance,… the gene lottery, etc.

But we can keep in mind that we build for fellow human beings, who are perfectly imperfect, and that the buildings will stimulate and comfort people for generations after they are built. Most people love the relaxed atmosphere that is created by old and worn architecture, that have survived the test of time and still looks beautiful! Walking through the Medieval towns of Italy, for instance, many will experience lower levels of stress, and feel safe and comfortable. Everything is worn, but still beautiful; we know it works; it is loved and well used.

A lot of the materials most commonly used in Modern Architecture today do not age gracefully. They are prefabricated in large units in huge quantities and put together on site. When they deteriorate it is difficult to maintain them without having to replace large parts of the building altogether. Good materials such as stone, brick, and tile are labour intensive, so they are not profitable in a short perspective.

Nobility may not come with the cradle, but if we are careful and considerate in our choices it may come with the rocking chair!

The Basket Building

This Newark, Ohio landmark may be the world’s most unique office building. Home to the Longaberger Basket Company, the building is a 180,000 square-foot replica of the company’s best-selling basket. While the real thing is less than $50, the building cost $30 million to construct. No one took owner Dave Longaberger seriously when he proposed constructing a seven-story replica of a basket, but employees moved into the new office on December 17, 1997. The building is a faithful replica, using stucco over steel to achieve a more authentic wooden appearance. The interior is less whimsical than the exterior but is no less impressive. A grand staircase and marble flooring lead to the seven-story atrium that fills the space with light.

The Kansas City Public Library

All libraries are full of reading materials, but this Missouri library actually looks like them. The library garage’s exterior was designed to look like a bookshelf, complete with massive book bindings. Locals voted on their favorites and chose the Lord of the Rings, Charlotte’s Web, The Invisible Man and other tales to create the library’s intriguing facade. The mylar book spines measure nearly 25 feet tall and nine feet wide.

Wonderworks

This Pigeon Ford, Tennessee building turns American architecture on its head, literally. The upside-down building rests on its roof while the floor faces up to the sky. The topsy-turvy space houses over 100 interactive exhibits for families to enjoy, including laser tag, educational shows, magic demonstrations and a ropes course.

Chapel on the Rock

Seamlessly blending modern architecture with nature, this Arizona Catholic chapel sits within the red rocks of southern Sedona. The building’s designer, Marguerite Brunswig Staude, was heavily influenced by her teacher, famous American architect Frank Lloyd Wright. The chapel reflects their love of nature, open spaces and geometric design.

Quadracci Pavilion

Welcoming visitors to the Milwaukee Art Museum is this stunningly futuristic design from Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava. The dramatic 142,050-square-foot space reflects both modern design and old-world craftsmanship. Hand-built concrete flying buttresses, vaults and arches create impressive wings that actually close automatically when high winds are present. The 217-foot long wings are constructed of 72 massive steel fins that make a startling contrast with a blue sky and glisten in the sun. Designed to resemble a ship, the space overlooks nearby Lake Michigan with enormous floor-to-ceiling windows.

Rose Center for Earth and Space

A true architectural wonder, the American Museum of Natural History’s Rose Center for Earth and Space is a stunning example of American ingenuity and design. Located near Central Park in New York City, the center revamped the Hayden Planetarium’s design in 2000. The enormous glass cube houses the Space Theater, designed by architects James Polshek and Todd Schliemann. The redesigned space is six stories tall and seems to float in midair. The hidden complex truss work below supports the 333,000-square-foot structure. The museum’s Western Pavilion is just as stunning and allows visitors to enter the museum through a four-story archway of white glass.

Shoe House

The old woman that lived in a shoe would feel right at home in this Pennsylvania home. Designed to look like a shoe, the 1948 home is 48 feet long, 17 feet wide and 25 feet tall. An actual home, the space features three bedrooms, a kitchen, living room and two full baths. Designer Mahlon Haines originally intended the space to be used as an advertising gimmick but it later became a guest house. Today, the house draws tourists from all over the country that hope to sit at the kitchen’s curved breakfast table, which is located in the shoe’s heel, and to gaze out over the shoe’s tow from the second floor.

Masonry can be defined as the construction of building units together with mortar. Stones and bricks are the commonly used building units. Masonry may also be used for the construction of walls. It may be divided into two as stone masonry and brick masonry. Stone masonry is mainly used for constructing the fence whereas the Brick Masonry is used for constructing the walls of buildings. Stone masonry is the roughest and cheapest form of stone walling. Stone Masonry is divided into two as Rubble Masonry and Ashlar Masonry. Rubble masonry is again divided into random rubble and square rubble. In Random rubble, the stones used are of widely different sizes, whereas in square rubble, the stones used are usually squared and should brought to hammer dressed or straight cut finish. Polygon walling is also a type of rubble masonry. In this type, the stones are hammer finished on face to an irregular polygonal shape. These stones are bedded in position to show face joints running irregularly in all directions.

In Ashlar Masonry, the stones used may be extremely dressed. The blocks may be either square and rectangular shape. There are different types of ashlar masonries. One such type is ashlar fine tooled masonry. It is the finest type of stone masonry work. Here each stone is cut to regular size and shape. So as to have all sides rectangular. So that the stone give perfectly horizontal and vertical joints with adjoining stone. Another type is ashlar rough tooled, here the only difference is that bed and sides of each stone block are finely hammered. here the exposed face is finished by rough tooling.

Trading in precious metals is a speculative industry. An investor in precious metals must be aware of all events and world conditions affecting the value of metals from hour to hour. Precious metals are available as powder or bars and in different grades of modification. Each form is affected differently in terms of market value. Precious metals are traded like stock in the exchange. The traders operate on behalf of their clients for buying or selling precious metals. The dealer quotes the prices of precious metals which they want to buy or sell. The traders on the floor quote prices until they come to an agreement. The amount agreed upon becomes the current trading price of precious metals.

Online companies act as an electronic market place for trading in precious metals. Online buying and selling is convenient and easy. In order to purchase or sell, the client has to request a quote. The company will send an indicative order detailing the current market price of the product. When the client agrees to proceed, the company will lock the price amount. All trading companies have a minimum order limit. Companies offer discounts on bulk orders. The payment form includes wire transfer and electronic fund transfer. The handling, delivery and insurance charges vary with the weight of precious metals. Some online trading companies offer pool account trading.

Online companies offer full and mini sized contracts based on the quantity of precious metals. These contracts are useful for retail, commercial and institutional traders. The features of online companies include instant trade execution, global distribution, continuous trading hours, market transparency, financial integrity, and competitive exchange fees. Online trading companies provide services like lease rate charts, financial indexes, live quotes, and international currency charts. They also offer precious metal quotes and charts to cell phones and wireless devices.
